Three Wise Oracles

Description

"See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil"
When the Prophets of Old ultimately left this plane of existence, the Shining Temple was searching a new Seer, to ensure the Kingdom would be able to defend itself rom its enemies and from the ravages of Time and Nature, by the means of accurate and clear prediction about past, present and future.
A young woman with the ancient Gift of prophecy was ultimately chosen, but since the Oracle was meant to be untainted by Evil, and the new Oracle was only human, it was decided to split her in a Council, a powerful trio residing in the inner room of the Temple, sharing the same soul, fractioned in three equal human forms, but less tainted by the evils potentially brought by people seeking their knowledge.

The experiment was deemed an absolute failure. Since the Oracle was made immortal as well, she would never be removed, but since she was triplicated, each one of them believed to be the Oracle, and if they shared the same soul, each one carried a mind on her own, with different memories since the moment of the split.

Rules dictated that pilgrims had to ask the Oracle for one question, and one only, and they were entitled to receive one answer.

The first day the Princess asked one of the Oracles to tell her about her upcoming marriage. The deaf Oracle simply sat quietly, blissfully unaware of her surrounding, amused by the company of a young woman finally different by her, unaware both of the Princess' question, both of the cries of her other self, longing for sight, and simply told her of her happiness for the new encounter.

The Princess lost her Prince a few months later, during a war, and died of childbirth. She thought the Oracle was showing happiness for her choice.

Some months later the Prince brought a map of the Kingdom, asking the Oracle to point the place were they would be able to win the war easier. The blind Oracle took much time only to descend carefully the stair, touching the Prince's face, and unable to see the map, and describe it to the others, pointed a direction hoping her Gift would be able to overcome her current lack of eyes. This was the war that killed the Prince and the Princess.

In sorrow, rage and grief, the King asked the Chief Oracle to tell what was wrong, or else, they all would lose their heads. The Oracle just sat with a sad flicker in her eyes, motioning to her face.

Many years later, a young man, coming from a long-lost Kingdom, brought to the Shining Temple a necklace, with the portrait of a young Princess. They said him that the Oracle was now a failure, but he was a bright fellow, tempered by his difficoult life.

"Only one question...", he said. He put the necklace in the Blind one's small hands. "Please", he carefully asked "In front of you there's a lady, quite like you are. Put the necklace in her hands, and motion to your right".

The other Oracle seemed to recognize the pendant, and asked the Chief Oracle to confirm.

The Princeling was able to be crowned King, and by instructing his servants, to summon once again the Oracle.

He's thinking to merge the trio again in a single woman: better reign with a tainted Oracle at your side as a Princess, that be ruled by an uneffective Oracle, living like Evil wasn't there instead of fighting it.

It's effective :) I've always loved that proverb. This image conveys it very well.
